SARDAR
TARA SINGH was born in village Swabi West Punjab now in
Pakistan. His father Sardar Partap Singh was a freedom
fighter who migrated to Mumbai before the partition and
took part in freedom struggle along with National leaders
like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Morarji Desai and
others. Sardar Partap Singh was a very popular social
worker and politician who was instrumental in settling
the refugees from Pakistan mostly Punjabis/Sindhis in
Mumbai.
Sardar Tara Singh took his early education from Guru
Nanak High School, G.T.B. Nagar, Mumbai. Inspired from
his father, Sardar Tara Singh became a social worker
at a very young age. Later he joined politics to serve
the masses on larger scale.
Sardar Tara Singh joined Bhartiya Janata Party in the
year 1980 since its inception. He chose his area of
work Bhandup where poor working class people lived in
Slums and shanties without any proper civic amenities
and developments. Sardar Tara Singh worked for the people
of Bhandup day and night and solved their many civic
problems with his efforts.
Sardar Tara Singh was elected to the post of Municipal
Councilor from Bhandup in 1984 and retained his seat
for almost 20 years. Sardar Tara Singh with his dedication
and hard work transformed the entire Bhandup into a
highly developed suburb of Mumbai in the capacity of
Municipal Councilor of Bhandup. His popularity grew
to such an extent that in his third election he alone
defeated his 20 rivals from all the major parties, all
of them lost their deposits and he won by the highest
margin of votes in the entire city.
As a Corporator Sardar Tara Singh held many important
posts in the BMC such as Chairman-Improvement Committee,
Standing Committee, Health Department –Mayor in
Council etc. He was BJP’s group leader in the
BMC for five years.
Sardar Tara Singh received the ‘Best Corporator’
Award from then Hon. Governor of Maharashtra Sh. P.C.
Alexander in recognition of his dedicated services as
a Corporator.
In BMC Sardar Tara Singh always raised his voice against
corruption, unearthed and exposed many big scandals.
The media gave wide coverage to the exposures and he
was known as crusader against corruption in the BMC.
He was always the voice of the people in the BMC. The
NGO, AGNI flew 221 Black Balloons in Bandra once to
protest against 221 Corporators of the BMC. AGNI flew
one White Balloon and that was for Sardar Tara Singh
the only corporator with clean-white spotless image
in the BMC-the man of the masses.
He also got an award and certificate from Bombay Suburban
Muslim Federation for dedication to the cause of unity
and peace.
Sardar Tara Singh became MLA from Mulund Assembly Constituency
in 1999 with a thumping majority of votes (35000) defeating
his nearest rival congress candidate. In his first term
as MLA Mulund, Sardar Tara Singh completed crores of
rupees development works for the people of Mulund Assembly
Constituency from his MLA fund. Sardar Tara Singh became
household name because of his relentless work for the
people.
Sardar Tara Singh created history by winning Mulund
Assembly seat again in 2004 on BJP ticket with huge
margin of votes, as in the past forty years no sitting
MLA had won this seat for second term. In the last four
years Sardar Tara Singh has completed many big tasks
which no other MLA could initiate in the past.
Sardar Tara Singh gave a huge Ganpati Visarjan Talav
fully developed in the Mulund East on Eastern Express
Highway to the cheers of lacs of Mulund east residents.
A five acre Morya Udyan, a beautiful garden with jogging
tracks is under development adjacent to the Talav. Another
landmark task to his credit is a huge garden at Yogi
Hills which he could secure from the clutches of land
shark builders for the people of Mulund west.
The people of Mulund East especially of the MHADA colony
were facing acute problem of accidents at Eastern Express
Highway as a result many precious lives of the citizens
were lost. Sardar Tara Singh was instrumental in constructing
a Mini Fly over on the Highway in order to prevent frequent
accidents. Apart from this now two skywalks to connect
Mulund East and West for the pedestraints has already
been commenced and will be completed within six months
with the efoorts of Sardar Tara Singh. The most important
task which Sardar Tara Singh has commenced and completed
in Mulund East recetnly is a huge Ganpati Visarjan Talav
and a beautiful Garden around it which will benefit
lacs of devotees and citizens of Mulund. There are many
more projects and proposals in the pipeline to be initiated
for the benefit of the people of Mulund in near future.
Apart from his social and political activities Sardar
Tara Singh is a deep religious man and involved in many
religious events. He is equally involved in art and
cultural activities. Every year he organizes several
such functions such as Baisakhi, Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s
Martyrdom day and Kirtan Samagam etc.
Sardar Tara Singh is the President of Panchayati Gurudwara
Bhai Joga Singh. Here meals to the poor people are being
provided free of cost for the last many years. Medicines
and injections to the poor patients are being distributed
free of charge. Needy students get their books and fees
from the Gurudwara.
Sardar Tara Singh is the President of the Sardar Tara
Singh Manav Seva Trust. Under its auspices Langar (free
food) is being provided to the poor people daily in
the afternoon in Bhandup continuously for the last seven
years. Hundreds of poor people every day take their
food in the Langar. Free Eye Camps, Blood donation camps,
Medical Camps are also being organized under its auspices
in Mulund – Bhandup areas. The tree plantation
programmes are also being organized time to time under
the auspices of Sardar Tara Singh Manav Seva Trust.
The huge Yogi Hills garden in Mulund west is being maintained
by the Manav Seva Trust.
Sardar Tara Singh has contributed a lot in the field
of education also. He was instrumental in starting an
Educational Complex near Shivaji Talao Bhandup by donating
land for the purpose. At present many educational institutions
like Parag Vidyalaya, Sahyadri Vidyalaya, Malyali School,
Guru Nanak School including a B.Ed. College are functioning
here. Sardar Tara Singh himself has got his own Education
Society under its auspices; S.P.S. Janata Vidyalaya
is being run in the same Complex.
Sardar Tara Singh led many agitations to protest against
increase in the fair of S.T. Buses and rise in prices
of Ration at Ration Shops. He has also led an agitation
against Cow killings in Mumbai. He had been to Jail
many a times in connection with different agitations
and processions. His biggest and longest agitations
were against load shedding in Mulund and Bhandup.
Sardar Tara Singh was awarded a prestigious award ‘Shane-Kaum’
(which means he is the prestige of the community to
which he belongs) by a social and cultural organization
known as Versova Punjabi Association, Mumbai.
